Law Roach is reminiscing about prompting the change when Zendaya decided to wear her hair in dreadlocks at the Oscars event in 2015.
The celebrity stylist who has known the actress personally and professionally since her high school days came clean at the Teen Vogue Summit revealing the style choice the Challengers star made for her Oscars look when she was only 18 years old.
The celebrity stylist who works with Julian and has been friends with the actress since Julian was in high school listened to the music at the Teen Vogue Summit and told everyone of the outfit Julian chose for herself during the Oscars when she was At the same time, viewers of Fashion Police heard co-host Giuliana Rancic say that Zendaya looked like “she smells like patchouli oil or weed” that night.
While Roach does not mention Rancic’s name during the panel discussion, he said these “really awful comments” made by “this TV personality” prompted a meaningful dialogue.
“Fashion has the power to be political, and we should use fashion to say what we like and what we do not like, what is happening in the political arena because it is our voices that should be heard,” the stylist added.
The latter went on to actually alter how Black people’s hair was acceptable in schools and workplaces. So, although, our mission was not to give this bold statement after that happened, The Crown Act was, in fact, born from that.”
Crown Act in 2019 defines it as Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair or Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural hair which is historically associated with people of African descent stands for protection against discrimination by race-based hairstyles amended the statute to protect hair texture and protective styles such as braids, locs, twists and knots in the workplace and public schools.
Roach further said, It was something that we wanted for doing and it was not fully anticipated that it would happen so. But we are glad that it did because it genuinely sparked that of discussion of what is acceptable for Black people’s hair, particularly Black women.”
In response to Rancic’s comment, Zendaya decided to hit back at the former E! News host, stating that her response only included “spit-based rude comments and complete disrespect.” The Euphoria star continued at the time saying ‘To say that an 18 year old young woman with locs must smell of patchouli oil or weed is not only a large stereotype but outrageously pathetic.’
Rancic has since apologized for those statements on-air during E! News, saying, “This really has been a learning experience for me — I’ve learned a lot today — and this incident has taught me to be a lot more aware of cliches and stereotypes, how much damage they can do. And that I am accountable, each one of us is, to not foster them any further.”
