Denis Villeneuve Explains Why He Won’t Direct a Star Wars News Film: A Love Lost and Lessons Learned

Denis Villeneuve is explaining why he does not wish to make Star Wars film.

The Dune filmmaker does state that he fell out of love with the franchise somewhat, a rather long, long time ago.

Still on The Town podcast, Villeneuve pointed out that Star Wars messed up after two movies, the third one being Return of the Jedi that any fan would agree is a regression from the original Star Wars News, also known as A New Hope, and the sequel, The Empire Strikes Back.

I became obsessed with Star Wars News,” he said.

Yeah, Sylvester actually said that the film he had been looking forward to most in his life is The Empire Strikes Back. I watched the move a billion times on the screen. The Empire Strikes Back freaked me out. I adore Star Wars News.”

“The problem is, it all went south in 1983 with Return of the Jedi,” he went on. “It’s a long story. It’s due this time to a seed of rebellion planted one summer, I was fifteen, my best friend M K, and we were going to hire a cab one day and go to L.A. to confront George Lucas — we were so angry! Still today, the Ewoks.

I actually found out that it was a comedy for children. Star Wars effectively ossified in its own mythology, very inflexible, it was like a recipe, devoid of any element of surprise. And thus I’m not dreaming to do a Star Wars because it feels like code is very codified.”

In other interviews he stated that he would like to make one unique picture rather than jumping straight into another franchise.

Villeneuve also said he specifically does not want directing the movie for a streaming platform such as Netflix. “The big screen is part of the language, to tell a story to be embraced by a collective as a common affective space in a theater he said. “Since the beginning of time it was not meant for people to live alone, it was meant for people to live as groups.” With all this in mind I stand to defend the fact that the theater experience will triumph.
